Breathwork for optimal health & nervous system regulation
Breathwork for Optimal Health trains clients to breathe using the natural mechanics of the body to support optimal health and regulate their nervous system, leading to improved physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Breathwork has deep historical roots, with practices originating in ancient cultures like yoga, Tai Chi, and pranayama. Today, it’s a fundamental aspect of holistic health and wellness, integrated into various therapeutic approaches.
Even if you’re new to the world of breathwork, you might have unknowingly engaged in it. Have you ever taken a deep breath to soothe your nervous system? Well, that is a simple form of breathwork.
Benefits of breathwork – Transforming your health and well-being
Physical Health
Improved lung capacity leads to better oxygenation of tissues and organs, supporting overall vitality. Controlled breathing also aids in digestion and can strengthen the immune system.
Mental Health
Breathwork reduces cortisol levels and activates the release of endorphins, promoting relaxation and feelings of well-being. It's effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Additionally, it enhances mental clarity and focus.
Nervous System Regulation
By stimulating the vagus nerve, breathwork induces a state of calmness and counters the effects of chronic stress. This leads to improved resilience to stressors and a more balanced nervous system.
The science behind breathwork - How breathing impacts your body and mind
We work with the foundation of functional breathing, breathing through the nose, using the diaphragmatic muscles and an effortless breath for optimal health. The breath can down-regulate the nervous system, helping us feel calm, relaxed, and rested, supporting us in our daily activities and sleep, and the breath can up-regulate our nervous system when we need energy and to feel alert, often in the mornings or when we need to perform a task. Through our breath, we can bring a sense of balance and safety back to the nervous system, and alter our physical, mental, and emotional state.
Physiologically, mindful breathing enhances oxygen uptake, optimizes blood flow, and supports the body’s natural detoxification processes. It also regulates heart rate variability, positively impacting cardiovascular health.
Numerous scientific studies support the efficacy of breathwork in reducing anxiety, asthma, and sleep disorders, improving cognitive function, and enhancing emotional regulation. Research has shown its potential in managing conditions like hypertension, and chronic pain, and supporting the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, using our breath to ease hot flushes, brain fog, anxiety, stress, and promote optimal health.

Before discovering breathwork, managing my blood pressure was a worry and I constantly felt stressed. But with focused breathing, and slow, intentional inhales and exhales I have found a new way to relax. My practice has helped me stabilise my blood pressure and it is even lower than when I started. I am so happy to have found a natural way to help my condition. Thank you! Sandra, London
Breathwork has been a game-changer. Since I started practising conscious breathing my nervous system feels so much more balanced, I experience fewer bouts of anxiety and overall feel calmer. To top it off I am sleeping better and wake up feeling rested.Joe Brighton
