Breathwork for Perimenopause and Menopause
Breathwork for Perimenopause and Menopause supports clients to understand how fluctuating hormones can affect their breathing patterns and nervous system and how we can use our breath to support the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. As a female who experienced early menopause after two failed IVF’s and suffered considerably with menopausal symptoms ranging from severe headaches, up to 20-30 hot flushes a day, brain fog that left me not knowing how to do anything, and exhaustion from waking every hour at night I am compassionate, supportive and caring to women who are experiencing these symptoms.
By learning the foundation of functional breath for optimal health, and an understanding of how fluctuating hormones can alter our breathing patterns, we can learn how to use our breath to support us on our perimenopause and menopause journey. We learn how to regulate our nervous system, helping us feel calm, relaxed, and rested, and how we can use our breathing to aid a good night’s sleep and support symptoms such as anxiety, tiredness, hot flushes, and brain fog. We learn how to up-regulate the nervous system when we need energy and to feel alert.
In addition to Functional Breathwork, we may incorporate Conscious Connected Breathing, to release emotions, energy, trauma, limiting subconscious beliefs or patterns stored within, and our self-identity as we transition through perimenopause or menopause.
Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause
Brief Overview:
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, typically starting in a woman’s 40s. During this time, the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen, leading to various physical and emotional changes. Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstrual periods for at least 12 consecutive months, marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years.
Common Symptoms:
Perimenopause and menopause can bring about a range of symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, vaginal dryness, reduced libido, and cognitive changes. Women may also experience sleep disturbances, headaches, weight fluctuations, and changes in bone density.
Importance of Support:
Navigating perimenopause and menopause can be a transformative but challenging journey. It’s crucial to recognize the value of comprehensive support methods. Holistic approaches like breathwork offer a natural and empowering way to address both the physical and emotional aspects of this transition. By incorporating breathwork into your wellness routine, you can find comfort and balance during this significant life stage. Controlled breathing techniques can effectively mitigate many of the common symptoms, promoting a sense of well-being and vitality. Moreover, the practice of intentional breathing fosters a deep sense of self-awareness, which can be profoundly beneficial during this time of change. Conscious Connected Breathwork allows us to explore the emotional feelings attached to this stage of life and allows us to explore these feelings in a safe and nurturing environment. Embracing holistic support like breathwork empowers women to navigate perimenopause and menopause with self-compassion, kindness and an inner belief that we are whole.

Hormonal Balance
Insights suggest that breathwork may play a role in regulating hormonal fluctuations, contributing to a smoother transition through perimenopause and menopause. While further research is ongoing, many women report positive effects on hormonal balance through breathwork practices.
Emotions
Perimenopause and Menopause can evoke a wide range of emotions relating to how we feel about our bodies, the identity that we hold about ourselves, the beliefs that we have attached to childbearing years, our femininity and the sense of aloneness that some women may experience.

As I approached menopause, I struggled with no longer having periods and seeing myself as an attractive female. Whilst other people told me it didn’t matter, it did matter a lot to me, as my periods stopping signified an end to a stage in my life. I never had children and the menopause brought back so many emotions about how I felt about that. With Breathwork I have been able to acknowledge the pain I feel and release it, be kind to myself, and see life in a different view than the narrative I was told growing up, that all women have babies. I have had moments of clarity in my breathwork sessions where I can see a new life path for me that feels rewarding and exciting to live. I feel seen and acknowledged in Pauline's company, she offers empathy and support but also creates an environment where I feel strong within myself.Debbie, Brighton
I am so grateful that I found breathwork and how it’s helped me with the challenges of perimenopause. I have been suffering from hot flushes, extreme mood swings (one minute I love the world and the next I am filled with annoyance), and disrupted sleep that I constantly felt exhausted and fed up. My sessions with Pauline have helped me a lot, and I am finally getting more rest! The guided breathing exercises helped me feel calm and more relaxed, my nervous system doesn’t feel as agitated, and I have a sense of mental clarity and feel emotionally more balanced. I have really been able to work through some of the emotional stuff that I have been carrying about being perimenopausal and how I see myself. Thank you, Pauline.Sara, Brighton
